Does your life reflect your faith in a good God?

A Devotional Meditation on Psalm 84:11

For the Lord God is a sun and shield;

The Lord gives grace and glory;

No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Our Series on the Attributes of God

Today’s meditation is part of a series focused on the attributes of God. I’m using Chip Ingram’s The Real God: As He Longs for You to See Him and A.W. Tozer’s The Knowledge of the Holy as references for definitions and some insight. If you would like to learn more about each of these attributes, I recommend starting with Ingram’s book (he quotes Tozer often).

A Working Definition of God’s Goodness

The goodness of God is that which disposes Him to be kind, cordial, benevolent, and full of good will toward men. He is tenderhearted and of quick sympathy, and His unfailing attitude toward all moral beings is open, frank, and friendly. By His nature he is inclined to bestow blessedness and He takes total pleasure in the happiness of His people.

Devotional On God’s Goodness

Isn’t it refreshing to know that God is good? He is not an angry God that we are trying to please. Nor is he a confusing God that we are trying to figure out.

He is our sun . . . our source of life. A constant that supplies us with every good thing we need. And He is our shield … protecting us from the enemy.

I haven’t always viewed God as good. I think we each have our own brand of warped views on God, and I saw Him as hiding, as aloof.

But He is good. He is reaching toward me at all times, beaming down and protecting me at the same time. He’s always been perfectly accessible. It’s not that I didn’t know how to access Him, it was that I didn’t know I already was.

God is Good in Bad Situations

And sometimes it’s hard to see that God is good because our circumstances aren’t.

Ultimately, God isn’t good because he does good things for us. And God isn’t good because of something in us. God is good because of something in him. He can be nothing else. Both God and his choices remain good, even when they may not feel or look particularly good to you.

Chip Ingram

And what matters most is to live in the faith of that knowledge. Do you live like God is good despite your situation? Or is God’s goodness dependent on your blessings?

Ingram continues, “When you and I believe that God is good, we will be able, like never before, to take the risks of actually living by faith.”

Suggested Meditation

Below is a look at my dialogue with the Holy Spirit while meditating on this passage. I meditate on the same verse every day for at least a week, and this is just a model to get you started. For the Lord God: I take a moment and rest in the power and sovereignty of the Lord. I breathe him in and out, humbled to be in conversation with the Lord, Almighty.

is a sun: Father, you are light. You are life. You sustain me and show me the way. I quiet myself and picture His warmth, knowledge, and goodness covering me.

and shield: I am protected. I stop and ponder that for a while. He protects me from my enemies, illnesses, and my own negative thoughts. Only things He approves can reach me. And if it reaches me, it’s OK, because He is with me.

The Lord gives grace: I am quiet and humbled by His grace. Grace that I need minute by minute.

and glory: Any glory I may have is from the Lord. I am thankful and honored. I am quiet and give all accomplishments to Him.

No good thing does He withhold: You allow goodness to come to me. Things that are for my betterment and not for my destruction. In your infinite wisdom and goodness, you filter what I receive. I am quiet and accepting of what you deem good.

from those who walk uprightly: Lord, I ask you to help me walk uprightly. I long to be more and more aware of your presence each day. Thank you for being by my side at all times.
