Our Verse of the Week
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.Psalm 91:1
Can you see this truth in your mind’s eye? What images does this verse stir in you? I picture a mountain standing barrier to a storm with a valley protected down below in its shadow. The psalmist offers up images of a fortress, a protective bird, a shield, and a protector from all sorts of earthly threats.
The whole chapter is a beautiful series of images of protection and finishes with a covenant promise from God:
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”Psalm 91:14-16
He promises His protection and His presence, but we are not supposed to be passive recipients:
- Do you dwell in His shelter? Daily? Hourly? Step-by-step?
- Are you resting in His shadow?
- Do you trust Him enough to observe the Sabbath?
- Does your daily, weekly, and monthly schedule have white space to hear from the Lord?
- Do you love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and soul?
- Do you acknowledge His name, His presence, His blessing in your life to others?
- Do you call upon Him?
Our God is mighty to save and faithful to us, His adopted children. I encourage you to take some time every day to reflect on this promise and ask Him to bring it to life for you. His Word is living and designed to permeate our inner most dark places so that it can transform our lives!

Whoever: Me, Lord. I am the one your Word is speaking about. Thank you for intimately knowing me and speaking to me. Thank you for creating your promises, protection and love for me.
dwells in the shelter: I crave your shelter. I want to dwell there, stay there every minute. I don’t want to be a visitor or guest; I want your shelter to be my home.
of the Most High: Lord, only your shelter will do. I have so many options in this world where I can try to find protection: money, family, friends, health … but only yours comes with the power to faithfully keep me safe.
will rest: You give me rest. Thank you Lord, that I may cease striving and just rest in your arms. You keep the world at bay so that I may soak in your power and love. What a beautiful opportunity that is. Help me not take it for granted.
in the shadow of the Almighty: I want your cooling shadow on me at all times. It soothes and protects me so that I may go out in this world covered. How great is my God to love me like this!!
