Our Verse of the Week
But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life. –JesusJohn 5:40
The whole passage here is: “You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me. But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40)
Isn’t it interesting that Jesus is frustrated with people that know scripture? People who have dedicated their lives to “pouring over” the words of God? Doesn’t it seem they should have been the first to recognize him?
But they couldn’t see the miracle through their head knowledge. They chose to substitute something that provided earthly comfort for a relationship with Jesus.
We can see the same pattern being played out over and over again today. Church, relationships, worship, Bible studies, volunteering … all good things that we can fill our lives up with and still not come to Christ. Especially if we’re not encountering them with the help of the Holy Spirit.
It’s really simple, and Jesus doesn’t sugar-coat it: we have to personally come to him for life. That’s it: simple, powerful, and yet clouded in mystery.
Scripture, church, mentors … they’re springboards into the arms of Christ. They are holy gifts and tools from the Lord, and as we mature in who we are in Christ, we need to take personal responsibility for our relationship with him.
Are there times or areas in your life where you reach for a substitution? This week we’ll focus on the true source of eternal life.
Below is a look at my dialogue with the Holy Spirit while meditating on this passage. I meditate on the same verse every day for at least a week, and this is just a model to get you started. Meditating on scripture is a very personal journey and relationship with God, but you may find my Meditation Guide helpful. But you are not willing: Jesus, you give me so much freedom and choice. I thank you for that, but I ask that you continue to soften my heart toward you so that my stubbornness does not keep me from seeking you. Help me see the strongholds in my life … the habits, the attitudes, the distractions … that keep me from being willing. I’m silent and allow the Spirit to work through me.
to come to me: Jesus, I do want to come to you. Forgive me for my stumbles, for my pride and my ignorance. Guide me in my path to keep coming toward you. Draw me closer as I take those steps.
so that you may have life: You are living water. You are the bread of life. You are the way. Your bounty of life-giving sustenance overwhelms me. I want to be consumed by you.
