Is your light shining into your area of the Kingdom? Do you reflect Jesus right where you are?
Our Verse of the Week
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”–Jesus (Matthew 5:16)
Our verse begins with “in the same way,” so we need to take a look at the sentence just before this:
“Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone.”(Matthew 5:15)
If Jesus is the light that we’re reflecting into the world, what is our stand (or table)? The question flows into our verse when we ask, “how do we let our light shine before others?” We need to recognize and embrace our place from which to shine.
If we’re asked to reflect Jesus, anywhere that He calls us is our table from which to shine. That light does not require the table of evangelism or preaching to shine into the world. It needs submission to Jesus, a longing to follow and imitate him, and a willingness to love others and the world as he did. He will use any situation, vocation, or relationship he has placed you in to shine. You are in him and he is in you. His reach is limitless.
The light we are to share with the world is a steady constant that is established in Jesus and is always present, whether we’re overtly talking about him or being kind at the grocery store. All God’s children shine: preachers, plumbers, missionaries, mothers, clergy, and crafters. The bowls we use to cover the light of Christ sometimes come in the form of fear of sharing with others, but can also look like misunderstanding of the importance of our holy placement in the world.

In the same way: Lord, just as a light is put on a stand to shine, you have a “stand” in this world chosen for me from which to shine. Thank you for shining your light through me. Help me understand and embrace the area you choose for me to shine in. Keep me from living under a bowl due to fear or misunderstanding.
let your light shine before others: Father, thank you for choosing the “others” in my life to shine for. Thank you for using me to reflect your glory to all those in my everyday life.
that they may see your good deeds: Lord, may they see you in my life, my words, my service, my love, my creations, my relationships, my character, and my choices. I long to come closer and closer to you so that you permeate everything I do at all times.
and glorify your Father in heaven: All for your glory, Lord. All for your Kingdom come here on earth. Thank you, Father, for asking me to be a part of your reign.
