This week’s verse is full of beautiful truths about God, and who we are to Him; it’s a verse I’ll be returning to over and over again in different seasons of my life.
Our Verse of the Week
The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.Zephaniah 3:17
This verse, written to the remnants of Israel as a promise of her redemption, captures numerous truths about the nature of God: He is with us, powerful, our savior, happy about us, loving toward us, forgiving, and boisterous in His love. Do you struggle to imagine God in any of these ways? What preconceived notions do you have about the Lord that this verse may challenge?
As I sit here in my backroom in the early morning, the birds are rejoicing outside. My space is filled with the joy of their voices to the Lord, simply over the start of a new day. I’ve never thought of the Lord singing loudly, as the birds do, because of me. How humbling that is!
He is singing loudly over me …. Me! Just as I am, because I am His daughter through Christ. At this time in my life, this verse speaks to my identity in Jesus. I want to be someone worthy of singing over, but the truth is, that I already am worthy because He loves me. All I have to do is hear that singing, listen to it, accept it, make it my truth. It’s His song, not my worthiness, that gives me an identity.
What Challenges You Right Now?
Do you struggle to really grasp that He is in your midst? That God has not forsaken you; that He is right beside you all the time?
Do you wonder if the Lord is really the savior that you need in your current situation? And/or if He will save you?
Are you worried that God may not be happy with you? Proud of you? Do you feel you’ve let Him down?
Do you have a hard time understanding that His love alone will quiet your fears, anxieties, doubts, guilt?
Are you drowning in guilt from the past? Do you struggle to accept a Lord that will love you without mention of your faults?
Do you question your worthiness to be sung over? Do you doubt God is doing that right now, even as you read this?
Do you struggle to hear Him?
I pray that meditating on this verse for the week will touch those hard places that misunderstand the Lord and who you are as His child.

The Lord your God is in your midst: Father, thank you for being with me at all times. You are faithful to me even when I am not faithful to you. You are my rock and my foundation. You will not forsake me or leave my side.
a mighty one who will save: You are a mighty warrior, my warrior. You can conquer all obstacles, all fears, and you will save me. Though I am eternally saved from this world and reside in your Kingdom, the challenges here on earth are still so hard. Increase my faith and my knowledge of your nature so that I may rest in your salvation.
he will rejoice over you with gladness: I make you glad. Father, thank you for taking pride in me and being pleased with me. Thank you for opening your arms in welcome as I return over and over again to you.
he will quiet you by his love: Your love, Lord, is all I need to quiet my weary soul. My past struggles, my inadequacies, my sins … all quieted, never spoken of again, because of your love.
he will exult over you with loud singing: What boisterous joy this brings to mind! Lord! You sing over me?! Me?! Help me see what you see. Give me your eyes to see myself, others, and this world as you do!
