Our Verse of the Week

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.

Proverbs 3:5 (MSG)

Devotional

Proverbs is a book that not only gives us great advice to live by, but also provides insight into our hearts. According to the author, we lean on our own understanding. We try to figure out everything on our own. We aren’t trusting in God, and probably aren’t even aware of what we’re doing.

I know I’m always trying to figure everything out; I think I can handle just about any situation if I can see the “why” and “how” of it. That’s why I like The Message’s version of this verse. The more traditional “lean not on your own understanding” doesn’t catch my attention, but “figure out everything” sums me up pretty quickly.

In my head, I don’t lean on my own understanding. How can I be leaning on my own understanding when I’m continually in prayer to the Lord to figure out His understanding? See the problem? I’m still trying to figure it all out; I’m trying to understand the creator of the Universe! Seems pretty silly when I put it that way.

The next verse from The Message says, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go.” And in the NIV, it says, “in all your ways submit to him.” We’re called to listen and submit, not understand or figure out. We need to let go, and just be in His presence.

He loves us more than we can comprehend. He wants what’s best for us because He wants His glory to shine into the world. We can lay down the searching and trust in His love, His timing, and His way.

Trust God: Father, I want to trust you more. Show me what trust looks like. Help me let go of my reliance on myself. Help me turn everything over to you.

from the bottom of your heart: Spirit, help my trust to not be in word alone. Work in me so that trust fills all my hurting, empty spaces. Change me from the inside out to rely on you.

don’t try to figure out everything: I want to figure it out. I want the answers. Lord, forgive me. I long for peace to stop searching and to just receive. To rest in your love, your ways, your timing, your wisdom.

on your own: I’m so glad I’m not on my own. Sometimes I forget and forge ahead without waiting to hear from you or submitting to your direction. But I know, Father, that life’s joys are only found together with you.
